For a basketball lover like me, today is a nice day. Spain playing the final against the US and getting closer to win… In New York, of the most exciting places to see great “street basketball” is in the court of West 4th. Really amazing!

Para un amante del baloncesto como yo hoy es un día bonito. España jugó la final de la Olimpiada contra EEUU y se quedo cerca de la victoria… En Nueva York uno de los sitios que más me gusta para ir a ver baloncesto callejero es la pista de West 4th. Es alucinante!

It looks it was yesterday, but it’s been 4 years since I first came to NY thinking to stay just for 1 year with La Caixa Scholarship. I never though I was going to spend here so much time but now I don’t see myself living out of US in a while. Universe is intelligent and puts us in the place where we must be. For the moment I just wanna thank it for everyday that I spent here and all amazing people that I met and made my life better.

Parece que fue ayer, pero hace ya 4 años que aterrice en Manhattan pensando en pasar un año por aquí con la Beca de La Caixa. Nunca pensé que iba a estar tanto tiempo, pero la verdad es que no me veo viviendo fuera de US en bastante tiempo, pero no adelantemos acontecimientos. El Universo acaba colocándonos donde debemos estar. Por lo pronto, solo quiero dar las gracias por cada día que he pasado aquí y toda la gente increíble que he conocido y han hecho mi vida mejor.

Traveling is great. When you go to a different country you find new places, learn about different cultures and meet amazing people. Besides, sometimes you have the good luck to meet very special people as we did when we were invited to India for the celebration of Kolkata International Film Festival. There we met Tivi Magnusson, an outstanding film producer from Denmark that I guess is breaking all the records in the Oscars Awards.

His productions have been nominated 6 times and he got the statue in 3 occasions. Last time, last year when he got the Academy Award for a short film called The New Tenants. Hope to meet Tivi again soon somewhere in the world. Best of luck.

Viajar es increíble. Cuando vas a otros países conoces diferentes lugares, descubres otras culturas y sueles conocer a gente muy interesante. Jose y yo fuimos invitados al Festival Internacional de Cine de Kolkata, en India. En esos días maravillosos tuvimos la suerte de conocer a Tivi Magnusson, un productor de cine danés alucinante que intuyo está rompiendo todos los records de nominaciones en los Oscars.

Sus producciones han estado nominadas a 6 estatuillas y en 3 ocasiones se ha vuelto a casa con una de ellas. La última vez que esto sucedió fue en la gala del año pasado, donde recogió el premio por un cortometraje de ficción llamado The New Tenants. Espero que algún día nos volvamos a juntar con Tivi en algún punto del planeta. Aunque está claro que no la necesitas, te deseamos mucha suerte, Tivi.

Some months ago, I was lucky to meet Victoriano izquierdo in New York. He is [potentially] a real genius. Outstanding photographer, visionary in social media, and most importantly, a nice and intelligent guy.

The truth is that I had a lot of fun talking with him while he was living in NY, and you just have to take a look in our blog to realize that we used many of the advises that he gave us. Thanks Victoriano!

Hace unos meses (bastantes ya), tuve la fortuna de cruzarme con Victoriano Izquierdo en New York. Es realmente un genio en potencia. Fotógrafo excepcional, visionario en temas de redes sociales, y tío majo y listo sin más.

La verdad es que disfruté mucho de las charlas que tuvimos mientras vivió en la ciudad de los rascacielos, y como queda patente con nuestro blog, hasta le hice caso en muchos de los consejos que nos dio. Gracias niño!

It is true that in our industry we try to connect with the audience, but it does not happen very often that in same way you feel you are improving the life of others with your work. Our friend Fran Guijarro taught us that is possible. Specially when he invited us to shoot I wish in San Francisco.

This little project has helped directly Moses Corbins‘ life, the main character of the film. The awards that we have won have been donated to several ONG’s that takes care of homeless people in California. With the last award in FILMETS, we decided to buy Moses a Macbook, because he always dreamt to have one to be more conected with the rest of the world. Now he even has a profile in Facebook, and we want to invite you to add him as a friend.

Es cierto que en nuestro medio siempre trabajamos para conectar con el público, pero no sucede tan a menudo que sea visible que de alguna forma puedes ayudar a alguna gente con lo que haces. Nuestro amigo Fran Guijarro nos enseñó que eso es posible cuando rodamos nos propuso rodar I Wish en San Francisco.

Ese pequeño proyecto ha mejorado directamente la vida de Moses Corbins, su protagonista. Los premios que hemos ido ganando con el corto los hemos destinado a varias ONG’s de California que ayudan a los vagabundos de aquel estado. Con el último premio ganado en Filmets, hemos decidido comprar un Mac a Moses porque llevaba mucho tiempo soñando con uno para sentirse más conectado con el resto del mundo. Ahora ya tiene incluso perfil en Facebook y desde aqui te invitamos a que le añadas como amigo.

Last week-end our film I Wish won a new award in Filmets Film Festival. Vicky Alegrí, one of our collaborator went to Badalona to pick it up. Thanks to Vicky and the festival, because this is really important for all of us, and specially for Moses.

La semana pasada nuestro corto I Wish ganó un nuevo premio en Filmets Film Festival. Vicky Alegrí, una de nuestras colaboradoras fue a recogerlo a Badalona. Gracias Vicky y gracias al festival, porque este premio nos hace muchisima ilusión, especialmente por Moses.

Today, a master has passed out. I had always admired Garcia Berlanga’s films, specially El Verdugo and Placido. Four years ago, i had the chance to meet him in a film festival where he was the president of the jury and he gave me an award for the best direction. Then I went to his office to ask him for a reference letter to apply for La Caixa Scholarship. I have great memories of that evening. It was a very special moment. He wrote me the letter by hand and I remember that I said: “Mr. Berlanga, I am aware of how many wonderful stories have been born from your hand…”. He looked touched, and I remember a tear rolling down in his face while saying: “you guys told me so many good things…”. Thanks master for helping me to get the scholarship that allowed me to come to the US, and of course, for all those wonderful and inspirational movies that you directed.

Hoy ha muerto un maestro. Siempre había admirado las películas de García Berlanga especialmente El Verdugo y Plácido. Hace 4 años tuve ocasión de conocerle en un festival de cortos donde él era presidente del jurado y me dio un premio al mejor director. Poco después fui a su oficina a pedirle una carta de recomendación para pedir la Beca de La Caixa. Recuerdo esa tarde con muchísimo cariño. Fue un momento muy especial. Me escribió la carta a mano y recuerdo que le dije: “Señor Berlanga, cuántas maravillas han salido de ese puño”. Recuerdo que se emocionó y mientras una lágrima le recorría el rostro soltó: “Es que me decís unas cosas…”. Gracias maestro por ayudarme a conseguir la beca y venir a US y por todas las películas maravillosas que has rodado…

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity of sharing set with Iciar Aragon. She was the DP of the short film Colors, which I directed. It was amazing working with her, because she is really passionate and creative with her work. She suggested me many different looks for the film until we both agreed with the one that would fit better with the story. I really believe that Iciar will have a great future as a DP in Spain, US, or whatever country she decides to work in, because it is not usual to find someone with that level of commitment and devotion.

We shot Colors in 4 days in a Cemetery in New York, with the RED ONE. Pepe Salcedo will be the editor of this short film, that will start going to film festivals next fall. Hopefully it will have a successful round in them.

Hace unas semanas tuve la suerte de compartir set con Iciar Aragon. Ella fue la directora de fotografía de Colors, un cortometraje dónde yo fui el director. Fue genial trabajar con ella, porque tiene pasión y talento en su trabajo. Me hizo un montón de propuestas para el look del corto, hasta que ambos nos decidimos por apostar por  el que vendría mejor a la historia. Estoy convencido que Iciar tendrá una brillante carrera como directora de fotografía en España, US, o cualquier país dónde decida trabajar, porque no es habitual encontrar gente con su nivel de compromiso y entrega.

Rodamos Colors durante 4 días en un cementerio en Nueva York, con la RED ONE. Pepe Salcedo será el editor de este corto que esperamos vea la luz este otoño para empezar la ronda de festivales. Seguro que lo hace muy bien.
