It’s been 5 years since I first came to NY with my bag filled of hope and a bit of fear. I came thinking to stay only for a year (two like maximum), but after 5, I’m still here, really grateful for all the opportunities and lessons that I have lived (and I will live).

Hoy hace justo 5 años que llegué a NY con la bolsa llena de ilusiones y algún que otro miedo. Vine pensando en estar sólo un año. Dos a lo máximo, pero después de 5, aquí sigo, encantado con todas las oportunidades y las lecciones vividas y por vivir.

It looks it was yesterday, but it’s been 4 years since I first came to NY thinking to stay just for 1 year with La Caixa Scholarship. I never though I was going to spend here so much time but now I don’t see myself living out of US in a while. Universe is intelligent and puts us in the place where we must be. For the moment I just wanna thank it for everyday that I spent here and all amazing people that I met and made my life better.

Parece que fue ayer, pero hace ya 4 años que aterrice en Manhattan pensando en pasar un año por aquí con la Beca de La Caixa. Nunca pensé que iba a estar tanto tiempo, pero la verdad es que no me veo viviendo fuera de US en bastante tiempo, pero no adelantemos acontecimientos. El Universo acaba colocándonos donde debemos estar. Por lo pronto, solo quiero dar las gracias por cada día que he pasado aquí y toda la gente increíble que he conocido y han hecho mi vida mejor.

Today, a master has passed out. I had always admired Garcia Berlanga’s films, specially El Verdugo and Placido. Four years ago, i had the chance to meet him in a film festival where he was the president of the jury and he gave me an award for the best direction. Then I went to his office to ask him for a reference letter to apply for La Caixa Scholarship. I have great memories of that evening. It was a very special moment. He wrote me the letter by hand and I remember that I said: “Mr. Berlanga, I am aware of how many wonderful stories have been born from your hand…”. He looked touched, and I remember a tear rolling down in his face while saying: “you guys told me so many good things…”. Thanks master for helping me to get the scholarship that allowed me to come to the US, and of course, for all those wonderful and inspirational movies that you directed.

Hoy ha muerto un maestro. Siempre había admirado las películas de García Berlanga especialmente El Verdugo y Plácido. Hace 4 años tuve ocasión de conocerle en un festival de cortos donde él era presidente del jurado y me dio un premio al mejor director. Poco después fui a su oficina a pedirle una carta de recomendación para pedir la Beca de La Caixa. Recuerdo esa tarde con muchísimo cariño. Fue un momento muy especial. Me escribió la carta a mano y recuerdo que le dije: “Señor Berlanga, cuántas maravillas han salido de ese puño”. Recuerdo que se emocionó y mientras una lágrima le recorría el rostro soltó: “Es que me decís unas cosas…”. Gracias maestro por ayudarme a conseguir la beca y venir a US y por todas las películas maravillosas que has rodado…

I met Fran Guijarro through La Caixa Scholarship. He studied advertisement and now works as a creative for Alma DDB, one of the best agencies in the US. One day, Fran called me from San Francisco and told me a brilliant idea for a short film. I loved it  and I flew to California to shoot I wish; a very nice short film that we have just premiered in Notodofilmfest.

Moises Corbins, a real homeless in San Francisco, is the lead actor on this film. Kamel Films and Powernap Films produced it with the collaboration of Canal Plus, Ventana Azul, Wikreate and La Caixa. I hope that you enjoy it… And make a wish!

Conocí a Fran Guijarro gracias a la beca de La Caixa. Él estudió publicidad y ahora trabaja como creativo para Alma DDB, una de las mejores agencias en US. Un día recibí una llamada suya. Me contó una idea brillante para un cortometraje y me propuso dirigirlo. Así que me planté en California para rodar I Wish, un corto super chulo que acabamos de estrenar en el Notodofilmfest.

Moises Corbins, un vagabundo real de San Francisco, es el protagonista de nuestra peliculita. Kamel Films y Powernap Films producen con la colaboración de Canal Plus, Ventana Azul, Wikreate y La Caixa. Espero que lo disfruteis… Y pedir un deseo!

Thanksgiving is the biggest Holiday in US (something similar than Christmas in Spain). That day, besides of the roasted turkey, there is the tradition of saying “thank you” for something that really made a different for you that year.

I have many, many things in my life to be thankful for, but this year, I wanted to thank to La Caixa Scholarship Program. They gave me the opportunity of coming to US to pursue my dream. Without their support, I would not be the kind of person that I am right now. That is why I will always be really thankful to them.

Acción de Gracias, es la fiesta más importante en Estados Unidos (sólo comparable a nuestra Navidad). Ese día, además del pavo asado, existe la tradicción de dar las gracias por algo o alguien que han hecho que tu vida sea mejor.

Por suerte, tengo muchísimas cosas en mi vida para estar agradecido, pero este año quería aprovechar a dar las gracias al Programa de Becas de La Caixa. Ellos me dieron la oportunidad de venir a US a perseguir mi sueño y sin su ayuda, hoy no sería la persona que soy. Por eso les estaré siempre agradecido.
