I have to admit it; I have vertigo. If I get up to a certain height and I look down I feel sick. But the good news is that all those phobias disappear when I put my eye in the viewfinder of the camera. When I am shooting, even if I am high in a crane, I am all day having fun, as a little child, and ask them to go higher and higher as if I was in an amusement park; Like in this photo in the beach of Cadiz, when we were shooting a commercial in 35mm for Doblezero. How much fun will be waiting for us? How much to learn and keep going up…

Lo reconozco: Tengo vértigo. Si me subo a una altura y miro hacia abajo me mareo. Pero la buena noticia es que todas esas fobias desaparecen cuando pongo el ojo en el visor de la cámara. Cuándo estoy rodando, aunque esté en la grúa no hago más que disfrutar como un niño pequeño, y pido que suba más y más alto como si estuviera en un parque de atraciones. Como en esta foto que nos tomaron en las playas de Cadiz mientras rodabamos un spot en 35mm para la productora Doblezero. Cuánto nos queda por disfrutar y aprender. Cuánto por seguir subiendo…

The “Madrid Film Festival” has started. They project 43 short films in 35mm during this week, all supported by the Community of Madrid. Tomorrow Wednesday 10th March will be the premiere of “Juan con miedo” (trailer) and “Genio y figura“, where I did the cinematography. It will be in the Circulo de Bellas Artes of Madrid, both are included in the same session at 19:00 and 22:30. I look forward to see the reaction of people in the cinema. Good luck to Daniel Romero and Hatem Khraiche and crews. You are all invited.

Ya ha comenzado la Semana de cortometrajes de la Comunidad de Madrid. Se proyectarán 43 cortos en 35mm durante la semana. Todos ellos han contado con el apoyo de la Comunidad de Madrid. Mañana miércoles 10 de Marzo será el estreno de “Juan con miedo” (trailer) y “Genio y figura” en los que dirigí la fotografía. La cita es en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid, los dos coinciden en la misma tanda, será a las 19:00 y 22:30. Estoy deseando ver la reacción del público durante la proyección. Mucha suerte para Daniel Romero y Hatem Khraiche. Estáis todos invitados.

Last weeks my friends Toni & Mercedes invited me to a party at their apartment in New York. When I arrived there I saw that they have put the poster of Basket Bronx close to the one of E.T., the masterpiece of Spielberg. It is true that ours is smaller but I though that it was fair. Like E.T., I have very clear my objective. I could even point it, and I feel that my bike starts flying…

La semana pasada mis amigos Toni y Mercedes me invitaron a una fiesta en su apartamento en Nueva York. Cuando llegué allí vi que habían puesto el poster de Basket Bronx junto al de E.T. Es cierto que más pequeño que el del maestro Spielberg, pero me pareció justo. Como E.T., tengo claro el objetivo, podría hasta señalarlo, y siento hasta que mi bici empieza a volar…

This year started really well. Genio y Figura & Juan con Miedo are about to release in 35mm. In both projects I had the opportunity of working as a DP. I am very proud of them, and very thankful for the experience and for the wonderful people that I met in set.

But 2010 had more surprises for me, and they did not last much to arrive: I have just started to shoot my first feature film as a DP. It is call Brutalbox. We are shooting in Madrid, with RED ONE during February and March. The movie starts from a brilliant premise, although at this stage, the information about the project is being surrounded by a veil of secrecy. I will keep updating information when possible. For the moment, I show you this picture of the shooting.

Este año ha comenzado de maravilla. Tanto Genio y Figura como Juan con Miedo están a escasos días de estrenarse en 35mm. Ambos, son dos proyectos increíbles en los que tuve la suerte de trabajar como Director de Fotografía y con los que disfruté y aprendí muchísimo además de conocer a gente fantástica.

It is amazing how many options you can choose when you are color correcting a movie. Besides of controlling the levels of bright, contrast, and color, it helps you to increase dramatic feelings as a cinematographer. In this video you can see a little bit of that process which we did in the Lab Deluxe Film (Madrid), with Autodesk Lustre for the short film “Genio y Figura” of the director Hatem Khraiche. The premiere will be in March during the Madrid Film Week. The result is great, and I am pretty sure it will be one of the short films of the year.

Nunca dejaré de sorprenderme de la cantidad de opciones que ofrece la corrección de color. Te permite controlar totalmente la luminosidad, el contraste y el color, ayudándote a intensificar tus intenciones dramáticas como fotógrafo. Ésta es una pequeña muestra del proceso que utilizamos en el laboratorio Deluxe Film (Madrid) con su autodesk Lustre para el cortometraje “Genio y figura” de Hatem Khraiche. Se estrenará la primera semana de marzo durante la muestra de cortometrajes de la Comunidad de Madrid. El resultado final es increible, no me queda ninguna duda de que será uno de los cortos del año.

Last week we were in Barcelona and had a lot of fun. Valenti SanJuan and Carles Plans called us to make us an interview in Catalunya Radio about our past projects and the feature film that we are working on right now. I want to thank them for making us feel at home, thank Mikel Urmeneta and Albert Uria who were also part of the interview, and for having said very nice words about The Coen’s Brothers from Carabanchel.

La semana pasada estuvimos en Barcelona y nos lo pasamos fenomenal. Valenti SanJuan y Carles Plans nos llamaron para hacernos una entrevista en Catalunya Radio y hablar sobre nuestros proyectos pasados y sobre la película en la que estamos ocupados en estos momentos. Les quiero dar las gracias por hacernos sentir como en casa y también a Mikel Urmeneta y Albert Uria que entraron en antena y tuvieron palabras cariñosas para los ya bautizados Hermanos Coen de Carabanchel.

Juan con Miedo is the title of the short film for which I did the cinematography just a couple of days ago. With the financial support of La Comunidad de Madrid, Juan con Miedo invites us to immerse ourselves in the nightmares of a 11 years old kid.

Daniel Romero is the director of this thriller that will be for sure present in many film festivals next year. Dani is brilliant and brave. A young and talented director who will shortly bring a lot of good news for Spain’s film industry. Juan con Miedo is my third collaboration with Daniel, after El Embaucador and El Descenso. I am looking forward to show you the trailer soon.

Juan Con Miedo es el título del cortometraje en el que dirigí la fotografía hace tan solo unos días. Subvencionado por La Comunidad de Madrid, Juan con Miedo nos invita a sumergirnos en los temores de un niño de 11 años.

Daniel Romero es el director de este thriller que seguro estará presente en muchos festivales el año proximo. Dani es brillante y valiente. Un joven director que dará muchas alegrías a nuestro cine. Juan con Miedo es nuestra tercera colaboración tras El Embaucador y El Descenso. Espero en breve poder mostraros un trailer.
